Out Now Commentary: Candyman (1992)

Image
This month’s Out Now with Aaron and Abe commentary track is exploring a sweet urban legend. Aaron is joined by Brandon Peters, Yancy Berns, and Scott Mendelson to discuss Candyman , the 90s supernatural horror film that stands for a lot. This adult-oriented slasher film not only supplied an iconic movie villain portrayed by Tony Todd but enough fuel for discussion about how the choice to set this story around Chicago’s Cabrini-Green housing development meant taking on unique themes for the time. There’s plenty more discussion about the nature of the film, the performers, the state of horror at the time, and lots of fun tangents as well. Weekly Recap: Reminiscence, The Protégé, Demonic & More!

Image
There doesn't tend to be a lot to write home about by the time we get to late August as far as the summer movie season goes (not much to champion regarding the state of the world right now either, but I digress). That said, a couple of original films made for adults have their share of positive attributes. Reminiscence  is the big release of the week, with Hugh Jackman heading up a sci-fi detective story. There's also the old-school revenge-action film, The Protege , with Michael Keaton, Maggie Q , and Samuel L. Jackson , which has more going on than I expected. Also - I do have my latest Variety article here as well, as I interviewed some of the crew from Don't Breathe 2. Plenty of other reviews for new streaming options as well, including the horror film Demonic (I'll have something to say about the more successful Night House next week). Additionally, please listen to our latest podcast episodes, including our thoughts on Free Guy, Don't Breathe 2 , The

This week's  Out Now with Aaron and Abe is catching its breath and talking video games. Aaron and Abe are joined by CinemaBlend’s Eric Eisenberg and Dadward Spiral host Aaron Pruner to talk all about Don’t Breathe 2 and Free Guy . Hear what the group has to say about these two films and what value they have as a thriller and another video game-inspired blockbuster. Also enjoy some trailer discussion, games, and more . Tune in for Out Now Quickies™ ( 7:48 ), Trailer Talk for House of Gucci and Malignant ( 20:13 ), the first review for Don’t Breathe 2 ( 34:57 ), a Game ( 1:05:57 ), the second review Free Guy ( 1:17:00 ), a second game ( 1:42:30 ), and Out Now Feedback ( 1:41:50 ). Out Now Nights 20: Gawain’s Suicide Quest For The Green Knight

Image
For this Out Now Nights , Aaron and Abe are on hand for a double review. First is a look at The Suicide Squad once again, but now Aaron has a chance to share his thoughts, with more of a spoiler-y focus in mind as well, as they tackle some key scenes, deaths, and more that came from the twisted mind of James Gunn . Later, Aaron and Abe both go in-depth on their praise for The Green Knight and just how expertly done this cinematic chivalric romance is, with emphasis on how David Lowery has interpreted the text, and Dev Patel continues to shine as an actor. Two reviews for one round of Nights, if you have the time, enjoy! You can also find links to the episode at AudioBoom or Spotify . Subscribe via iTunes HERE

Weekly Recap: Free Guy, Don't Breathe 2, Beckett & More!

Image
As we enter the middle of August, there may only be so many potential blockbusters left, and possibly less time left to go to crowded theaters, this week sees the release of a few notables. Free Guy is a big-budget original film with Ryan Reynolds that's quite fun. Meanwhile, Don't Breathe 2  is a 5-years later horror sequel that doesn't quite deliver. I also have a review for the Netflix thriller Beckett . Additionally, please listen to our latest podcast episodes, including our thoughts on The Suicide Squad . So, enjoy all of these reviews and more, and be sure to check out my various essays, lists, and new trailers available to dig into as well. Enjoy, stay safe out there, and thanks for reading! New Movie Reviews: (All Reviews Are Linked) Free Guy -  Once it gets going, this is a fun video game-inspired adventure. -  In Theaters Don't Breathe 2 -   A misguided sequel that lacks the tension of the first. -  In Theaters Beckett -  A wro
