Weekly Recap: Godzilla, Rocketman, Ma & More!

This week is a big one for movies, literally, as  Godzilla: King of the Monsters  has come stomping into theaters, with King Ghidorah, Mothra, and Rodan in tow. Plus, you have an imaginative Elton John biopic in the form of  Rocketman , and a successfully creepy thriller in the form of  Ma , starring Octavia Spencer, of all people. There's a whole new world of new releases this week, starting with Disney's remake of Aladdin . The film is fine without being great, but it has enough to make it consistently entertaining. Also out is the Superman horror riff Brightburn , which delivers a violent good time. And lastly, you have Booksmart , a smart and very funny high school comedy. I'm thinking John Wick is back and he's about to make a lot of people very happy. The third chapter in this unlikely action series has arrived in a prime Summer movie slot and it delivers. Some small releases open this week as well, but there's plenty of stuff for all to see right now. This includes at home, as this week brings in a couple notable releases including a terrific documentary. Weekly Recap: Long Shot, Non-Fiction, Avengers & More!

While the Avengers are not about to leave the top of the box office pile, Long Shot arrives this weekend, and it's a very good comedy full of laughs. Meanwhile, a few other flicks hit theaters, but Non-Fiction  is one that stands out. It's a fun screwball comedy from Olivier Assayas of all people. Meanwhile, some solid home releases this week, including a great Jackie Chan set from the Criterion Collection .
