Out Now Flashback: The Birds (1963)

Image
Back in 1963, the Master of Suspense delivered a film that terrified audiences for a variety of reasons and further examined the mind of its director. Alfred Hitchcock’s The Birds has been celebrated by many over the decades since it was made and it is now the subject of a discussion for Out Now with Aaron and Abe in their inaugural “Flashback” episode. The guys are joined by Professor Mike Dillon , who is happy to have fun exploring what the film has to offer as well as dive deep into the themes, production, and stories about what star Tippi Hedren had to go through. Enjoy, as there is plenty of ground (and air) to cover. So now, if you’ve got an hour to kill… You can also find links to the episode at AudioBoom .  Subscribe via iTunes HERE

These are just some of the questions we went about discussing in this special bonus episode of Out Now with Aaron and Abe . Aaron is joined by Brandon Peters, Jim Dietz and Maxwell Haddad for a conversation debating the merits of claims that revolving around whether or not millennials are actually ruining things in some way. Lots of thoughts are heard on this matter, in addition to some over topics that end up related. Enjoy and let us know if you want to hear more of these types of conversations. Brief Thoughts: The Trip To Spain, Wind River & Kidnap

Image
I really enjoy putting my reviews together.  I honestly wish I could delve deeper into certain movies, but alas, I get incredibly busy and can sometimes only deal with movies to a briefer extent than I would prefer.  This is why I write these occasional "Brief Thoughts" posts on movies I have seen, as I want to at least offer some of my own perspective on them.  They may not be as polished, but I can at least get my opinions out there. This edition of "Brief Thoughts" features mini-reviews for The Trip to Spain with Steve Coogan and Rob Brydon , Wind River with Jeremy Renner and Elizabeth Olsen , and Kidnap with Halle Berry .

There are plenty of thoughts and interesting information to take in on this one, so enjoy and use this opportunity to revisit this film and some other classics from the great year for film that was 1967. So now, if you’ve got an hour to kill…

Weekly Recap: Logan Lucky, The Hitman's Bodyguard & More!

Image
Logan Lucky marks the return of Steven Soderbergh to cinematic releases and what a mark it is, as the film is a joy to watch. Less of a joy is the screaming match action-comedy, The Hitman's Bodyguard , which is also out this week. A few new items have come out for home viewing as well, which includes a new Criterion Collection release I had the chance to review. There's, of course, my latest review for Preacher  as well. Also be sure to check out this week's fun podcast. Lastly, I managed to get in a book review as well as an essay I'm very happy with. Enjoy! In Theaters Now: Logan Lucky -  http://whysoblu.com/lots-lik e-logan-lucky-movie-review/ (Now out and a lot of fun) The Hitman's Bodyguard -  http://whysoblu.com/ chemistry-helps-forgettable- bombastic-hitmans-bodyguard- movie-review/ (Silly and forgettable) Brigsby Bear -  http://whysoblu.com/brigsby- bear-full-quirky-heart-movie- review/ (Now in more theaters and worth seeing)

Kong Vs. CinemaSins: The Role Of Modern Film Criticism

Image
I found something interesting in a one-sided feud between director Jordan Vogt-Roberts and CinemaSins. The Kong: Skull Island director recently went on a lengthy Twitter rant about his film being the latest subjected to a video series that goes along the lines of “Everything Wrong With [movie] in [#] Minutes or Less.” He describes the function of these videos as lazy attempts to capitalize off of other artists’ efforts, and I agree. Even in acknowledging how the two men behind these CinemaSins videos are more or less trying to provide sarcastic critiques in good faith, I cannot say I find much to value in these lengthy video essays beyond giving the internet a negative base to stand on when discussing films. However, the real interest I found is in determining what makes good criticism in modern times.

Weekly Recap: Detroit, The Dark Tower & More!

Image
This week has two major releases. The expansion of Kathryn Bigelow 's historical thriller Detroit and the debut of The Dark Tower , the 90-minute adaptation of Stephen King 's epic book series. There is a lot to admire about one of these films and the other is merely a subpar attempt at something, instead of a great success or an interesting disaster. Additionally, reviews for new home releases, along with a new Preacher review. And be sure to check out the two great podcasts that came out this week, as one involves a solid debate over last week's release and the other features my mom and I talking Get Out . Enjoy!
