How About That Trailer? - Snowden

I guess it is time for me to finally anticipate Oliver Stone's latest drama covering a real life and fairly recent event. There was a trailer for Snowden last year, but then the film was delayed and then delayed again. If it means Stone has had all the time he needed to make a great film, so be it (although I think we're still getting new cuts of Alexander). With this in mind though, how about that accent?

Joseph Gordon-Levitt stars as Edward Snowden and if you thought his accent was distracting in The Walk, he's now going for an alien robot voice that I really hope plays better in the context of the film. I hate having to single out things like this, but it is honestly distracting in a trailer for a film that looks like it could be really good.

The all-star cast certainly helps, with Shailene Woodley, Melissa Leo, Zachary Quinto, Tom Wilkinson, Rhys Ifans and Nicolas Cage all providing support. Cage actually stands out quite a bit, mainly because it's been a while since we've seen him in this territory, but for the most part, Snowden looks like it could be the powerful drama The Fifth Estate tried and failed to be, regardless of accent choices.

Of course, the Oscar-winning Citizenfour has already done a fine job on diving into the material we are going to be presented with. If Stone is truly back in top form though, he could be on the verge of releasing a film that is up to the level of JFK. We'll see what happens and hopefully I can take JGL more serious (I do tend to like him quite a bit).

Snowden hits theaters on September 16, 2016.
