89th Academy Awards: Predictions And Other Thoughts

Image
There are only a few days left until the   89 th Academy Awards , so it’s time to nail down my predictions. As usual, some categories have obvious picks, a few are even safe bets, but a good portion of this race is still largely up in the air. I try to keep track of the awards season and get a feel for what films seem to have earned their way to Oscar glory, but it’s never an exact science. That said, I have laid out all the categories, with some thoughts on what might be happening come   Oscar  night. The predictions have been highlighted with what I   think  will win in each category.

This week sees the release of a couple notable releases, including a film with Ice Cube and Charlie Day that I didn't get around to seeing. Weekly Recap: John Wick: Chapter 2, The LEGO Batman Movie & More!

Image
This is a pretty crazy weekend for geeks, as John Wick: Chapter 2 and The LEGO Batman Movie provide a double-dose of fun where the biggest issue becomes which to see first. Both are quite satisfying, along with the animated films and shorts that are now out in select theaters. There are also a few home releases to look out for as well. I have reviews for all, plus a really fun podcast episode to listen in on. Compared to the slowness of last week, there is now plenty to dig into, which is especially great given just how good these two major new releases really are. Enjoy! In Theaters Now: John Wick: Chapter 2 -  http://whysoblu.com/john- wick-reloaded-movie-review/ (A proper way to up the ante) The LEGO Batman Movie -  http://whysoblu.com/lego- batman-movie-review/ (Clever, hilarious and full of references) My Life as a Zucchini and The Red Turtle -  http://www.thecodeiszeek. com/2017/02/brief-thoughts- red-turtle-and-my-life.html (The two international ani

Thoughts On The Oscar-Nominated Animated & Live-Action Shorts From 2016

Image
Given the creativity and ambition of various filmmakers who are working outside of the world of feature films, it's great to be able to catch up on the Oscar-nominated short films . In addition to the many feature-length movies that are up for big awards, these smaller films are a sampling of the many great short films that arrive every year. Having had the chance to watch the nominated features in the animated and live-action categories (my girlfriend and I will be watching the documentaries soon enough), I wanted to take the time to share some thoughts on all of them. So here they are, presented in alphabetical order.

Brief Thoughts: The Red Turtle and My Life As A Zucchini

Image
I really enjoy putting my reviews together. I honestly wish I could delve deeper into certain movies, but alas, I get incredibly busy and can sometimes only deal with movies to a briefer extent than I would prefer. This is why I write these occasional "Brief Thoughts" posts on movies I have seen, as I want to at least offer some of my own perspective on them. They may not be as polished, but I can at least get my opinions out there. This "Brief Thoughts" post features two mini reviews for two of the 2016 Oscar-nominated animated films " The Red Turtle " and " My Life as a Zucchini ."

We then wrap things up ( 1:51:29 ) and have some bloopers ( 2:05:54 ), following this week’s close out song.  So now, if you’ve got an hour or so to kill… You can also find links to the episode at AudioBoom .  Subscribe via iTunes HERE

Weekly Recap: The Space Between Us & More!

Image
It's a pretty slow weekend for new theatrical releases. I have a review up for the bland romance The Space Between Us . I should also note that The Comedian  with Robert De Niro is a pretty bad film as well. Rings   is out this weekend, but I didn't care to see it. All of that said, the documentary I Am Not Your Negro  is out in select theaters and is pretty terrific. There are some other posts here, including new home releases and a couple of podcasts, which are really worth listening to. Enjoy! In Theaters Now: The Space Between Us -  http://whysoblu.com/space- us-movie-review/ (The Fault In Our Mars) Oscar Nominations and Thoughts -  http://www.thecodeiszeek.com /2017/01/89th-academy-awards-n ominations-thoughts.html Here's The Archive Of Every Review Throughout The Year(s) -  http://www.thecodeiszeek.com /p/review-archive.html
